Angkor Thom was built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by the Khmer empire's greatest king, Jayavarman VII. It is a 10 kilometer square city enclosed by an eight meter high wall. There are five gates. This causeway is at the south gate, the best preserved. On the left side of the causeway are 54 'devas' (guardian gods) and on the right, 54 'asuras' (demon gods).
